In the early Covid days, before we really felt the weight of it all, we had Matt and Cassandra over for dinner. We had good take out and just enjoyed spending an evening with them. During our conversation and while I was in the middle of a few things, Matt mentioned to Dave that he had to have surgery later that week for a spot on his tongue. It was a very casual conversation, neither Dave or I really realized the extent of it, until Matt had surgery a few days later when we learned that it was, in fact cancerous. This was absolutely unexpected as Matt is 24 and has no risk factors. Dave feared the worst. Everything changed direction, Covid was the least of our worries. Dave happened to be working the day of Matt's surgery which was a blessing as visitors are limited because of Covid, meaning Cassandra would have been there to hear the news alone.
The next two weeks were full for Matt and Cassandra, between scans, appointments, follow ups, etc. The family was unable to physically connect, so we made due with zoom calls and family text messages. It's incredible how empty we felt because we could not connect, how physically connecting brings so much comfort.
What started as a scary, unexpected diagnosis, gradually got better. Good news turned into more good news and as it currently stands, Matt is in good shape. He will need close follow up for the next 5 years, but we are optimistic. Matt and Cassandra are wise beyond their years, we love them both so much. We are hoping for only good things for their future.
We love Matt and Cass so much.

Greta gave Matt a 'We love you!' gift and she was so excited to see him open it, her heart was literally bursting with pride. I love that sweet girl. |
